Motion capture: animation of the future?

Motion capture: Animatie van de toekomst?

For years, Who did his best to motion capture to avoid in 2010, there could no longer escape. This was largely due to the overwhelming success of Avatar, requiring the use of the technique did a lot of discussion. But what does the future look like for the media?

King Kong (2005) The time motion capture only for vague animation films such as Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists was used, is far behind us. The technique by which movements of actors will be converted to a computer model, is increasingly being used in live act ion movies. This is the latest and most famous example, without a doubt, Avatar, the blue 3D adventure of James Cameron.Everyone looked (without knowing it?) to motion capture in Peter Jacksons King Kong and the Lord of the Rings trilogy and also Tim Burton made grateful use of the technique in Alice in Wonderland (see making-of).

No motion, but performance capture

The Polar Express (2004) Cameron himself calls the rather performance capture, because nowadays are no longer just the big moves that require registration, but also the smallest operations such as facial expressions.

What Cameron seemingly in one fell swoop did motion capture with avatar – on the map – does Robert Zemeckis for years with his animated films. As one of Hollywood's biggest supporters of the technique, over the past few years, he directed films such as The Polar Express, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol. It doesn't stop there, because he has at least three other projects ready.

Motion capture is here to stay

Motion-capture bij de animatiefilm van Kuifje Motion capture is not in the film world. The next few years, there are still more famous productions that are created using the technique.Of avatar come at least two expansion packs, Steven Spielberg presence to the filming of the cartoons of Tintin and Disney working on TRON: Legacy, a sequel to the popular cult movie from 1982. Motion capture to ensure that when a piece of actors who were younger, there will still be the same. So will (should) actor Jeff Bridges in the sequel as two drops of water are similar to themselves for nearly 30 years ago.

Animal Logic working on Happy Feet 2, but it is not entirely clear or motion capture is used for. The Studio did that, after all, not so for the upcoming owls epic Legend of the Guardians. For those who keeps superheldenfilms there is still more news: Mark Ruffalo, who will play the Hulk in The Avengers, a transform with motion capture to the gigantic green muscle bundle.

Motion capture voor The Yellow Submarine Zemeckis plant a remake of the Beatles-trip in Yellow Submarine.Small ImageMovers (that is, being wound up in 2011) is working on Mars Needs Moms! and, on the other hand, gave the Director that he also follows on from Who Framed Roger Rabbit wants to use his favorite technique. The characters would be addressed with motion capture, but the cartoon figures would in 2D.Actor Bob Hoskins detective Eddie Valiant, which played in the film, his name has been associated with the sequel. However, he was in some doubt as to the discretion of the Director to motion capture to use:

"I don't know what it's going to be. They want it in the same way as A Christmas Carol. But if [motion capture] looks like a cartoon, how to place a real cartoon in the movie? "

Although the art it is not really a cartoon seems to be, I do agree with what he means. The power of Roger Rabbit sat him in the opposition between live act ion and the cartoons. The combination of motion capture and cartoons could turn out to be able to create an ugly effect.

Motion capture is 'neppe movie clip ' from the list

Happy Feet (2006) In the past, a number of occasions messages surfaced about animation creators who say and look down on the use of motion capture. Especially when in 2007, two of the three Academy Award nominations for best animated film made with motion capture.Cars not, Monster House and Happy Feet. The latter, and that took care of disagreement with some animators.

'Nepanimatie ', it sounds ever since, unlike the traditional animation is not something created frame-by-frame.The organisation of the Academy Awards did a few months ago thereby in their new rules to include that no motion capture animation technique.

The way for motion capture is pretty

TRON: LegacyWith great films such as the Avatar-Galaxy Quest, TRON: Legacy and The Adventures of Tintin on the agenda, it seems the future for motion capture sealed.Millions of Hollywood is willing to invest in the technology.

Much will depend on the quality of the upcoming movies and responses, but the odds are high that you motion capture the coming decades will still very often find in the cinema. Both in your animation and movies.

How do you know vis-à-vis motion capture?A revolutionary technique with a lot of prospects or a boring way to traditional animations on to catch on?Please let us know at the bottom of this post …
